Adult disability payments & returning to work
How Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, Partial Capacity Benefit and employment supports can connect without treating them as interchangeable.

Disability Allowance
This is a means-tested payment for people aged 16 to under 66 who meet the disability, means and residence conditions. The maximum personal rate is €254 per week in 2026.
Invalidity Pension
This is different: it is a PRSI-based payment for people who cannot work because of long-term illness or disability and meet the medical and social-insurance rules.
Partial Capacity Benefit
A person already receiving qualifying Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension may be able to move to Partial Capacity Benefit where work capacity is medically assessed as reduced. The Department says to apply before starting work.
Work supports
Work and Access can fund practical workplace supports; EmployAbility can provide employment support; the Wage Subsidy Scheme supports qualifying employers. These can sit alongside a return-to-work plan rather than replacing the underlying social-protection decision.
Fuel Allowance transition
From September 2026, people moving from Disability Allowance or Blind Pension into work can retain Fuel Allowance for five years under the new measure, subject to scheme rules.
